My Sametime 8.5 install

Dec 22nd

Here I go, installing Sametime 8.5 in my lab environment. Figured I’d try it out in my lab before Golden Axing(tm) our production environment — you’re welcome Sally ;)

Before I continue, let me explain the term “to Golden Axe” something is to destroy it. Usually I tend to “Golden Axe” things when I’ve been a little reckless, and yeah, it came from the video game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Axe.

Alright, back to Sametime 8.5, my ADHD kicks in sometimes, sorry…

So, I’m going to start my tests by installing the following:

Windows 2003 Enterprise 64-bit – Why Enterprise? Because it was already installed!
Sametime 8.5 Standard Community Server – Downloaded CZA62ML.zip, thank-you IBM for using friendly file names…
Lotus Domino 8.5.1 64-bit

My installation, verbatim step-by-step (

- I’ve decided to add my new Sametime Domino server to our existing production environment to ensure enough testing will go into this prior to placing it into production.

- So far the installation went smoothly, with the exception of a minor DNS issue. I pointed my lab server to our internal DNS server but since it’s not on the same domain I had to create a local entry in the hosts. file for our Domino server name Domino1.

- Just stopped Domino and started the Sametime 8.5 install running the demo32.exe file (I never understood why they called demo32) and Sametime didn’t detect my Domino 8.5.1 installation. Going to fire up Domino and try again!

- Still no luck. Maybe it really won’t run on 8.5.1 and wants 8.5? Let’s try and find out… Going to start the download of 8.5. Too bad it’s too early for a beer… I wonder…

Here’s my error:
IBM Lotus Sametime Server 8.5 requires Domino to be installed before Sametime can be installed, but no Domino installation was detected. Install Domino and then install IBM Lotus Sametime Server 8.5.

As you can see in my image (below) I clearly have Domino installed and running!

- Didn’t work with 8.5.0 64-bit. I believe the problem is 64-bit. Going to try 32-bit version of 8.5.1.
UPDATE: Well, that did it. Sametime 8.5 works in a 64-bit environment (OS) but Domino needs to be 32-bit.

As of 3.15pm today I’ve moved along nicely.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

1. You can still install Sametime on one box.
2. I’m working on it…. please be patient :)

Sametime 8.5 has been officially released today!

I’m in the process of download all the components for Sametime Standard 8.5 and will begin installing in my lab environment. I’ve noticed there are many new components and a lot which run on Websphere, so I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a long day ;)

Hope to post some good news by end of day.

Reinstall Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 Tape Drivers

Dec 18th

Here’s a quick how-to which I often refer to:

1. Tools –> Wizards –> Device Configuration Wizard

2. Next (shows you a summary of your devices, be it B2D, auto-loaders, libraries etc). Click Next Again.

3. Choose the option to “Install tape device drivers”, and click Next. This brings up another wizard, and you can click Next.

4. Click Next at the USB device drivers warning…

5. Make sure the first option (Use Symantec drivers for all supported tape devices” is selected, and that the Additional options has “Use Plug and Play drivers for Windows 2000 or later” selected (might not need it, but I keep it on).

6. Click Next, and let your installation run. When it detects your tape drive and asks to install the drivers, choose the option to allow. A reboot might be required.

Download the latest Symantec tape drivers:

64-Bit Server

Did you reboot your VMWare ESX/ESXi server and find out none of your VMs are running? Chances are you never set them to run automatically upon restart.

Here’s how to change that:

  1. Load the VMWare vSphere Client
  2. Connect to your ESX/ESXi box or vCenter Server
  3. Select the ESX/ESXi host from the right panel
  4. Click on the Configuration tab
  5. Under Software select Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown
  6. Click on the Properties… button located on the top right
  7. Select your VM and move it up or down into the correct order. For automatic simply move it up to Automatic or Manual Startup

Cisco UC520 adding second language Payload error (aka How install a second language on the UC500/UC520)

Hello ninjas,

For my first post I’m going to let everyone know about an issue I ran into after upgrading a Cisco UC520 device to the latest 8.0.
** update: you can also use the below information to install a second language on the UC500/UC520 **

Firstly, I downloaded v8.0 on December 1st and there was another package posted December 3rd which contained an updated file, cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg, with a different date stamp and size than the one downloaded December 1st.

Seeing I had upgraded the UC520 with the December 1st package I needed to delete the file cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg from the system and download it to the UC again; as they [Cisco] seem to have changed it.

Software/Files Used

3CDaemon vers 2.0 rev 10 (download from here)

PuTTY (download from here)

UC520 8.0(0) – Software Package (download from here)

cue-vm-fr_CA-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.prt1 (download from here)

Instructions

1. Install the 3CDaemon and configure the FTP services (TFTP can’t be used for the language installer)

2. Copy the files  cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg (extracted from the file SCUE-UC500-7.1.3.zip within UC520-8.0.0.zip) and cue-vm-fr_CA-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.prt1 into the FTP folder you’ve setup in step 1.

3. Use PuTTy to connect to the UC520 device

4. Commands ran from the console:

    1. service-module integrated-Service-Engine 0/0 session

Press [ENTER] in case you don’t see the prompt UC500-CUE#

    2.  software remove downloadfiles
    3.  software install upgrade url ftp://IP ADDRESS OF FTP SERVER/cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg username <USERNAME> password <PASSWORD>

example: software install upgrade url ftp://192.168.2.25/cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg username cisco password cisco

    5. Now let’s install the French Canadian language pack

    1. software install add url ftp://IP ADDRESS OF FTP SERVER/cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg username <USERNAME> password <PASSWORD>

example: software install upgrade url ftp://192.168.2.25/cue-vm-langpack.uc500.7.1.3.pkg username cisco password cisco

    2. go ahead and confirm

    3. select option 10 for French Canadian

    4. enter x to tell the installer you’re done

Hope the above helps someone as we’ve spent close to the entire day on this. Make sure you have a full backup of your system along with the prompt and AA scripts. Let me know if I’ve left anything out; it’s the end of my day and wanted to post this before I got too lazy

You could technically install any additional language pack using the steps mentioned above just make sure the correct .prt2 file exists in the FTP folder.
